The initial assessment is the first step and involves gathering information about the your situation. This typically starts with a conversation. This conversation helps the counsellor understand the concerns, background information, and any relevant context regarding your well-being.
Following the discussion with the parent or guardian, the counsellor will have a conversation directly with the child. This allows the child to express their thoughts, feelings, and experiences in a safe and supportive environment. The counsellor will adapt their approach to the child’s age and developmental stage, using appropriate techniques like play therapy, art, or conversation.
Similarly to counselling children the counsellor will have a conversation with the person seeking counselling to gather information about their situation to understand context and background information. the counsellor will then be able to establish the how best to work with the person seeking counselling to ensure all their needs are being met and they are supported correctly.
During the initial assessment, it is important to discuss confidentiality. This ensures that both parties understand the limits of confidentiality and any situations where information may need to be shared for your safety and well-being.
Part of the assessment process involves explaining what counselling is and what it entails. This helps set expectations and addresses any questions or concerns they may have. It’s important to ensure that everyone involved understands the purpose, goals, and potential benefits of counselling.
Contracting is an important aspect of the counselling process. It involves establishing clear agreements and understanding between all parties involved, which helps create a safe and therapeutic environment.
Based on the assessment, we will determine whether we can offer the support needed by the person seeking counselling. If counselling is deemed appropriate, the format of the sessions will be discussed, which can include face-to-face sessions or online sessions via platforms like Zoom.
If it is determined that your service may not be the best fit for the persons’ needs, appropriate referrals or alternative support options may be suggested. Additionally, counselling services may be offered to the parent or caregiver if it is deemed beneficial for their own well-being and to support the child.
By following this comprehensive assessment process, our counselling service can gather the necessary information, establish a therapeutic relationship, and make informed decisions about the most appropriate course of action to support your well-being.
